Social context as a focus for rehabilitationIn some illnesses activity limitation is determined as much (or even more) by cultural factors as it is by the specific disease pathology or impairments experienced. There is now some evidence that cultural attitudes and expectations can be changed to reduce the burden of disability. This empirical evidence supports the WHO ICIDH-2 model of illness and the importance of contexts as intervening variables in the development and maintenance of disability.
