On rehabilitation of stoma patientsSurgical Department of Hospital Dornbirn, Vorarlberg, Austria Between 1981 and 1985, 130 patients received a permanent colostomy and an ileostomy at the First Surgery Department of Innsbruck University. Of these, 108 patients were entered into a rehabilitation programme. A special stoma outpatient department was established for these patients. At least one of the members of the department was constantly available to the patients by telephone. The results of rehabilitation are encouraging with 90% of the patients being fully reintegrated into professional and social life whilst only 10% could not be helped. The latter were patients who had either arteriosclerosis or personality problems.
